Sometimes, often times, you forget about them, until the burnt pizza on the bottom of the oven finally smolders and causes them to go off.

Did you know smoke detectors have an expiration date?

Most often its 10 years after they were manufactured (usually present on the bottom of your detector)  but your detector could be more or less and a few web searches should be able to answer the question for you.

Below are some quick steps and photos of how to swap out your detectors.

Note that I chose to remove the pig-tail and use the one that came with the new units, but some manufactures provide a quick connect adapter making the job even easier.

Old Smokes

The image you see here is of a 2007 FireX Smoke Alarm, these seemed to be working fine - but 2007 is way beyond their expiration date.

Pigtail switch

Sample of two boxes, one at the end of the line, the other between a few detectors.

New Pigtails

New detectors had new pigtails, Chose not to use adaptors that they offer.
